Former First Baptist Church Youth Group Leader Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Molestation
Scott Christner was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty and admitting to sexually abusing several boys while he served as a youth group leader at First Baptist Church in Goshen, Indiana. Christner was arrested in November 2019 after several victims came forward to report sexual abuse. He was arrested a second time a few weeks later on additional charges of Child Molesting after more victims came forward. Court documents indicate the sexual abuse occurred from about May 2012 through January 2017 when he served as a youth pastor at First Baptist Church.
Sexual abuse perpetrated by clergy and trusted advisors within the church community can happen in any faith. Shame, fear, and guilt mixed with religion can be a potent force that intimidates and prevents survivors from speaking up about sexual abuse. It is important to encourage survivors to report abuse so they can get help dealing with the trauma that is often suffered.
