Southern Baptist Leader Resigning Amid Disagreements with Sexual Abuse Investigation
President and CEO of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee Ronnie Floyd announced his resignation citing disagreements with the way the administration is handling an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse claims within the church. The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest Protestant denomination in the United States and was the subject of an investigative report by the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News which documented hundreds of cases of sexual abuse in Southern Baptist churches. The report indicated that in many of the cases the alleged perpetrators remained in the ministry. Following this publicity, the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee hired a firm to conduct a review of the allegations that the committee mishandled sexual abuse reports and mistreated survivors. Now, some leaders within the SBC Executive Committee are in disagreement with how the investigation should continue after leadership recently voted to waive attorney-client privilege for the investigation which will provide investigators full access to all information including legally protected records.
