Balloon sinuplasty (BSP) differs from traditional sinus surgery in that it does not involve cutting or removal of bone or tissue. However, BSP is not a risk-free procedure and should only be performed when medically necessary. Balloon sinuplasty is an endoscopic procedure performed under general anesthetic and involves a physician inserting a thin catheter equipped with a balloon into the nostril. The balloon is inflated to open and widen the sinus passage and then deflated and removed. Injuries including tissue damage, optical damage – which could include blindness, and serious infection can occur as a result of negligently performed balloon sinuplasty.
