In a notice filed with the Maine Attorney General’s Office, Heartland disclosed that unauthorized access to its network occurred between January 26-27, 2025. During this breach, files containing personal information were both viewed and downloaded by an unknown third party.

Heartland’s notice states that the information compromised includes names and Social Security numbers. The nature of the breach suggests that additional personal data may also have been exposed.

Heartland began notifying affected individuals by mail on July 17, 2025. In total, 25,185 people were affected by the breach; 19,077 of them are Indiana residents.

Although Heartland has not confirmed the exact cause of the breach, multiple cybersecurity watchdogs have reported that the ransomware group RansomHub has claimed responsibility. The group allegedly posted stolen data on the dark web, including samples of Social Security numbers and internal HR files.
