CohenMalad, LLP Sexual Assault Legal Team On Alert For Potential Victims
The Indiana Supreme Court has disbarred Winamac attorney Nathan Pearson for engaging in sexual relationships with multiple clients, exploiting their vulnerability and violating legal ethics. This decision, issued on February 14, 2025, underscores the severity of his misconduct and serves as a stark reminder of the legal profession’s duty to protect clients, not prey on them.
Pearson’s disbarment follows an investigation by the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission, which found that he engaged in inappropriate sexual relationships with at least three clients between 2016 and 2018.
Three Survivors Reported Sexual Abuse By Nathan Pearson
- Client 1: An 18-year-old woman with a history of substance abuse and past sexual trauma. While serving as her public defender, Pearson arranged late-night meetings at his home office, offered her alcohol, and initiated sexual contact. She testified that although force was not explicitly used, she “felt compelled because of the situation.”
- Client 2: A woman facing criminal charges, who was pressured into sexual acts after Pearson cornered her in a meeting room while her children were in another area. She later reported the encounter to her probation officer, which triggered further investigation.
- Client 3: A client with a history of substance use and sexual abuse, who met Pearson before retaining him as her attorney. After drinking liquor at his home, she woke up naked in his bed with little memory of what had occurred. Later, when she received a bill for legal fees, she believed Pearson had previously implied that sex was a form of payment for his services.
The court determined that Pearson manipulated and took advantage of vulnerable clients who had histories of substance abuse and sexual trauma, ruling that Pearson’s actions were not merely unethical but predatory, exploiting his clients’ vulnerabilities and violating fundamental professional conduct rules. His disbarment was effective immediately, ensuring he can no longer practice law in Indiana.
