Fractures lead to Recall, Total Removal of Zimmer Biomet CPT Hip System
Increased Risk of Thigh Bone Fractures results in recall and total removal of product
On September 17, 2024, the FDA issued a safety alert regarding the increased risk of thigh bone fractures (postoperative periprosthetic femoral fractures) associated with the Zimmer Biomet CPT Hip System Femoral Stem 12/14 Neck Taper.
Understanding the Risks
Hip replacement surgeries are often life-changing, restoring mobility and relieving pain for many patients. However, recent findings have raised concerns about the Zimmer Biomet CPT Hip System. Research has shown that patients implanted with this system are at a higher risk of experiencing thigh bone fractures after surgery compared to similar hip replacement devices. The risk of fracture is estimated at approximately 1.4% with this system, compared to 0.6% to 1% for other similar designs.
In July 2024, Zimmer Biomet initiated a voluntary recall of the CPT Hip System, updating its instructions for use and announcing plans to phase out the sale of the device by December 2024. Despite this, the FDA has expressed concerns about the ongoing use of the CPT Hip System and its potential risks to patients.
