Nurse Practitioner Katherine Curtis Arrested for “Pill Mill” Operation and Insurance Fraud
What's New, and What Former Patients Need to Know
In what was already a disturbing story of criminal malpractice, new charges have added to the troubling case of Katherine Curtis. The Carmel, Indiana nurse practitioner has been charged with serious medical and financial misconduct, related to the unlawful distribution of controlled substances and a fraudulent insurance claim. Law enforcement officials allege that the practitioner operated a “pill mill,” providing large quantities of prescription drugs without legitimate medical justification, and later staged a burglary to collect false insurance proceeds.
The expansive scope of allegations against Curtis only increases the urgency for anyone treated by her to consider their legal options. Questions raised in this case present serious concerns for former patients.
Originally reported as overprescribing narcotics, the case now includes allegations that Curtis used the identities of other nurse practitioners at her clinic, Reclaim Wellness, to secure prescriptions when pharmacies became suspicious of her name alone. ‍
‍Investigators allege that between May and August 2025, more than 1,100 oxycodone tablets were obtained within a five-day span through multiple pharmacies in Indiana. ‍
‍These facts show not only over prescription, but alleged deliberate schemes to circumvent regulatory oversight. Patients who were treated or prescribed medications by Curtis may now wonder whether their care was valid or compromised.
In addition to drug prescribing misconduct, Curtis is now facing multiple felony counts of fraud and obstruction of justice, and misdemeanor counts of false informing.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Curtis reported a burglary at her Carmel home, alleging theft of Louis Vuitton bags, Apple computers, cash and her wedding ring. Investigators say she took photographs of some items minutes before the burglary was reported, returned or sold some of the items, and initiated her insurance policy just weeks prior -- red flags that prompted further inquiry.
If you or a loved one were treated by Katherine Curtis and believe you were harmed by her improper prescribing practices or fraudulent billing or prescription schemes, you may have legal rights.
Patients may be entitled to pursue claims related to overprescribing or inappropriate use of controlled substances, addiction or medical complications resulting from negligent or deceitful care, financial losses from fraudulent or unnecessary treatments or insurance claims, and other forms of misconduct or breach of trust in the provider-patient relationship.
