Longtime Partner, David J. Cutshaw, Retires After 45 Years in Law

After a distinguished legal career spanning nearly 45 years, including nearly 25 years at CohenMalad, LLP, David J. Cutshaw has retired from the firm.

David joined CohenMalad, LLP in 2002 and went on to serve with distinction as an Equity Partner and Chair of the Medical Malpractice group, leaving a lasting legacy of exceptional client advocacy and legal excellence.

Throughout his career, David focused his practice on personal injury, medical malpractice, class action, mass tort, and business and commercial litigation. He tried numerous jury trials, particularly in the area of medical malpractice, and earned the respect of colleagues, opposing counsel, and clients alike for his skill, preparation, and professionalism in the courtroom. His work included leadership roles in high-profile matters, including obtaining a global settlement for more than 280 plaintiffs in medical malpractice and patient abandonment claims and serving as co-lead counsel in hundreds of claims involving complex cardiology-related procedures.

David’s accomplishments have been consistently recognized by his peers. He was selected as an Indiana Super Lawyer every year from 2004 through 2026, reflecting sustained excellence in Class Action and Mass Torts litigation. He was also named an Indiana Local Litigation Star by Benchmark Plaintiffs and consistently recognized by Best Lawyers for his work in medical malpractice and class action litigation.

David earned his Juris Doctor from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1982, and his bachelor's degree from the University of Indianapolis with concentrations in English and Political Science. Throughout his career, he remained actively involved in professional organizations and the legal community, exemplifying a deep commitment to ethical practice and client service.

David’s mentorship, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his clients have left an indelible mark on our firm and the broader legal community. While we will miss his presence, we are grateful for his many contributions and wish David and his wife Debbie a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement.
