Former Team Physician, Dr. Brad Bomba Sr. named as habitual abuser in new lawsuit
Two former Indiana University, Bloomington men’s basketball players, Haris Mujezinovic and Charlie Miller, have taken legal action against the university, accusing former team physician Dr. Bradford (Brad) Bomba, Sr. of sexual abuse. This lawsuit brings serious allegations of misconduct, claiming that Dr. Bomba subjected athletes to unnecessary and invasive rectal exams during routine physicals, which the plaintiffs now understand to be sexual abuse.
The lawsuit, led by former players Mujezinovic and Miller, accuses Dr. Bomba of conducting unnecessary rectal exams under the pretense of routine medical care. These exams, which were part of mandatory annual physicals for basketball players, are alleged to have been medically unjustified, constituting sexual abuse.
Dr. Bomba served as IU’s team physician for nearly 30 years and also worked with the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team.
University’s Alleged Prior Inaction and Current Response
According to the lawsuit, IU officials, including basketball staff and trainers, were aware of the abuse but failed to intervene. The plaintiffs claim that despite their complaints, the university ignored the issue and allowed the abuse to continue for years.
The filing follows IU’s acknowledgment of potential legal action and its decision to hire international law firm Jones Day to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations. Jones Day’s investigation will focus on gathering evidence, reviewing medical records, and interviewing witnesses to determine the extent of Dr. Bomba’s actions and IU’s response.
Impacts on Former Players
Both Mujezinovic and Miller, who went on to have successful basketball careers in Europe, are now speaking out, urging other former teammates and student-athletes to come forward. Miller expressed disbelief at IU’s lack of action, stating, “I will never understand why IU leadership did nothing to protect us from what I now understand was sexual abuse.”
Moving Forward
The lawsuit not only seeks compensation for the plaintiffs but also aims to raise awareness of the abuse suffered by student-athletes under Dr. Bomba’s care. The case has drawn parallels to other high-profile university abuse scandals, such as those involving Michigan State and the University of Michigan.
As IU’s independent investigation continues, this lawsuit marks an important step in seeking justice for the victims. The University has pledged to abide by the findings of the investigation and take necessary actions based on its outcome.
