Indiana Cardiologist Ed Harlamert Terminated by Witham Memorial Hospital

CohenMalad, LLP medical malpractice attorneys have received confirmation from Witham Memorial Health Hospital that it's Chief of Cardiology, Dr. Edward Harlamert, has been removed.

While Witham has not made a public statement about the specific reasons for Dr. Harlamert's termination, this development follows repeated concern over his highly irregular clinical practices, a series of ongoing malpractice claims filed by former patients, and previous terminations from Community Health, Indiana University Health and the Indiana Heart Hospital in Indianapolis.

Unnecessary, Excessive Cardiac Procedures

Our firm represents multiple individuals who were harmed by the actions of Dr. Edward Harlamert. In these medical malpractice complaints and lawsuits, some decided and some still pending, the theme is disturbingly common. Our clients allege that Dr. Harlamert subjected them to a series of unnecessary and excessive cardiac procedures, including angiograms and stent placements.

For example, one former patient underwent 44 cardiac catheterizations and received more than 40 stents, all in less than 10 years.

Most recently, in January 2025, Dr. Harlamert was found liable by an Indiana medical review panel in the matter of Carlota Lawton v. Edward Harlamert, M.D. and Witham Hospital. The Indiana Department of Insurance determined that that Dr. Harlamert did commit malpractice by improperly performing an unjustified cardiac catheterization and by placing an unnecessary coronary stent.

Dr. Harlamert's Malpractice Cases Received Local and National Attention

The cardiologist's treatment of patients has been criticized by his former colleagues, independent medical experts and covered by multiple media outlets.

Dr. Harlamert was included in the Lown Institute’s “2023 Shkreli Awards,” which recognize some of the worst examples of actions by individuals in health care. He was dubbed the "stent king" for placing stents inside of stents, and reportedly placing as many as 80-90 stents in a single patient.
