Lamictal (lamotrigine) use has been associated with serious, potentially deadly side effects including Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Some patients prescribed Lamictal for treatment of mood disorders or seizure have reported Stevens Johnson Syndrome injuries. Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a deadly disease of the skin and mucous membranes in which the top layer of the skin separates from the deeper layers of the skin. Symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome include:
- Burning rash, blisters, or red blotches on the skin
- Persistent fever
- Blisters in the mouth, eyes, ears, nose, or genital area
- Eye infections
Stevens Johnson Syndrome associated with Lamictal use is essentially a hypersensitivity immune response in which the skin is burning from the inside out. It is considered a dermatological emergency that can worsen if not treated.
